Britannia Silver

As in recent years, the 2015 silver Britannia will be struck in 0.999 fineness. It has a face value of £2 and contains one troy ounce of silver.

The History of the Silver Britannia

The silver Britannia was introduced in 1997, following on from the success of the gold version.

Change in Finish

The field on both sides of the coin has a dimpled effect, giving it a matte finish. We prefer this as it doesn't show any production marks which we've come to expect in previous years.

Obverse Design

The obverse features the fourth portrait of the Queen, as used from 1998 on all British coins. This will be the final time the portrait appears on the coins, as it it was replaced on 2nd March 2015.

Reverse Design

The reverse design shows the classic standing Britannia.

As the 2015 proof Britannias are not released until later in the year, we suspect they will feature the new, fifth portrait. See our page about it here.

Alloy Analysis

In response to a question from one of our customers about the 1 part per thousand of impurity or admetal:
We used our new Niton tester on this coin, and got interesting results:
Obverse
Silver 1000 (+-6)
Reverse
Silver 1000 (+-8)
All shown as parts per thousand. The figures in brackets are tolerances.
As no other metals appear to have detected, it should be safe to assume that they constitute less than half of one part per thousand (< 0005 or 0.05%). From all this, we would deduce that the blanks are not alloyed with any other metal, but use "pure" silver, so any impurities would be the result of "imperfect" refining rather by addition.

Investment Silver

Many of our customers are happy to invest in silver and pay the VAT, currently at 20% and we are more than happy to supply investment silver. The advantage of purchasing silver Britannias over any of the other silver one ounce coins is that as they are legal tender Sterling they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
