The 2016 £1 coin is the last round edition of the coin. In 2017, the coin will undergo a re-design, featuring many security enhancements, and will adopt a new, 12-sided shape.

These last round £1 coins will not be released into circulation, meaning it is highly unlikely that you'd find one in your change!

We received our stock of uncirculated coins on 14th June, 2016, whilst the silver versions arrived on 22nd June, 2016.

The Last Round One Pound

The round £1 design was introduced in 1983. In recent years it has suffered from counterfeiting, with as many as one in thirty being fake!

Design

The reverse features the beasts of the four nations. It was designed by the amateur artist and coin collector, Gregory Cameron, and represents the equality and dignity of the country.

The obverse shows the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark.

The coin comes in a colourful presentation folder, which opens up to show the history of the coin.

If you want to find the value of a coin you own, please take a look at our page I've Found An Old Coin, What's It Worth?

Please, if you are going to ask us whether the £2 coin you own is worth more than £2, please, please, please read our other pages about them first, and even then the answer is almost certainly no. About 1,000 people every week read one or more of our pages about £2 coins. Hopefully most manage to find what they wanted. A tiny percentage, but still about 20 per week ask us whether a £2 they have found in change / in a drawer / been given is worth more than £2. The answer to 99% of these questions is already on our site. We do not have the time or patience to answer such questions individually.
