Copper Blank 20p Error Coin
For a variety of reasons, coins are sometimes struck on an unusual blank or in an unusual alloy. Most of the time, this is deliberate as the mint is striking special proof commemoratives in a different metal (usually gold of silver), however, sometimes, the reasons are more mysterious, and these coins are referred to as 'errors', because they are not officially sanctioned and an error is assumed to have occured resulting in their creation.

Some of the time, we suspect that mint workers create them for fun, or perhaps as a deliberate attempt to create rarities. There is certainly a good motivation to do this, as error coins often trade for a substantial, and even ludicrous premium over their face or intrinsic value.
Whatever the reason, unusual pieces like this exist in many varieties, and there are many specialist collectors who will pay handsomely for these coins.

The answer to 99% of these questions is already on our site. We do not have the time or patience to answer such questions individually.
