Alderney Coins
Coins in Alderney were probably first introduced during the late Iron Age, around the time they were first used in southern Britain and Northern Gaul in the 2nd century B.C.
English and French coins would then have been used, as well as Jersey money, which included the 13th of a Shilling. The reason for this unusual denomination was because it was worth 1/26 of a French Sous, which made transactions with the French Mainland easier.
Today, the Alderney Pound is the official currency of Alderney. By law, this corresponds exactly with the value of the British Pound Sterling. In practice however, coins of Britain and Jersey are typically used in the island, and coins of Alderney are struck mainly for collectors. The denominations of the Alderney Pound correspond with their British equivalents.
