Historic Austrian Currency
The history of Historic Austrian currency is very complicated, and an article far longer than this one would be required to do real justice to the subject. As there were many changes and reforms to the currency systems used in Austria prior to the time the first decimal currency being introduced in Austria in 1857.
However, typical denominations in use in Austria included the heller, vierer, pfennig, kreuzer, groschen, thaler (taler), gulden and ducat. Their values relative to each other sometimes fluctuated as a result of currency reforms. The heller was originally a small coin worth half a pfennig, which eventually disappeared in the 17th century, becoming a slang term for a low-value coin. The The name was eventually resurrected as the sub-unit of the Austrian Krone, introduced in 1892 when Austria-Hungary adopted the gold standard and a new currency. The vierer was a relatively short-lived coin worth 4 hellers.
The Austrian pfennig, descended from the £sd currency system introduced by Charlemagne in the 8th Century A.D. had different value in different parts of the Holy Roman Empire and in Austria Proper in medieval/early modern history. However, the denomination disappeared in Austria in the 1690s, although the Pfennig as a denomination existed in other German states until Germany abandoned the Deutschmark in favour of the Euro in 2002.
The Kreuzer was a relatively low-value coin, which in its early days fluctuated in value between 4 and 4.2 pfennigs. When Austria first went decimal in 1857, the Kreuzer was revalued and became the sub-unit of the Austrian Gulden until 1892.
The Groschen (etymologically related to the British 'groat' and meaning a large silver coin) was also used in Austria, and the term was resurrected and used for the subunit for the Austrian schilling until the introduction of the Euro in 2002.
The thaler (or taler) was a large silver coin, first struck from silver from Joachimsthal in 1518, was used in various forms until it was demonitised in 1908. However, 1780 restrikes of the Maria-Theresa Thaler are still struck to this day by the Austrian mint and used as a silver bullion coin that still circulates in certain parts of the world to this day.
The Gulden was the standard unit of currency in Austria from 1754 until 1892. The Gulden was worth 60 old Kreuzer until decimalisation in 1857, from which time it was worth 100 New Kreuzer. The Gulden was discontinued in 1892 when it was replaced by the Krone.
The Ducat was used mainly as a trade coin, and is still, along with the four ducat, struck by the Austrian Mint as a bullion coin.
The Krone was replaced in circulation with the Schilling in 1924. This currency was subdivided into 100 groschen. Replaced by the Reichsmark in 1938 following the Anschluss, the new Schilling was launched following the end of World War II and continued in circulation until 2002 upon the introduction of the Euro.

Austro-Hungarian Commemorative Silver 2 Gulden
This silver 2 Gulden, equivilent to two Austrian Florins or Two Hungarian Florints, was issued to commemorate the 25th Annivesary of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz-Josef and his wife, Empress Elisabeth. Tragically, Empress Elisabeth was assasinated by an anarchist in 1898, although by this time, she had long been estranged from her husband, who died in 1916, having lived to see his country driven into a war provoked by the assassination of his nephew and heir, Franz Ferdinand in 1914.
