Bakers Half-Penny Token (Payable at Dennis's, London)

Featured is a Halfpenny token struck to commemorate an act of Parliament which gave relief to overworked apprentice and journeyman bakers by limiting the hours by which the baking and selling of baked goods could take place on a sunday. As the existance of this token suggest, (struck at the instigation of Jonathan Dennis, a master baker on Tottenham Court Road)) this act was welcomed by master baker employers as well as their employees, as the existance of the act prevented rival bakers from baking and selling goods, meaning that they were not pressured to maintain the workload in order to keep up with them.
