Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and one of the fastest growing economically. Its capital, Brasilia was purpose built in the 1950s to take over from Rio de Janeiro as the nation’s capital. As a former Portugese colony, its official language is Portugese, and it is the largest Lusiphone country in the World.

Brazilian Coins
Early Brazilian coins were similar to Portuguese coins, and were denominated in Reis. Brazil, along with much of South America, underwent many monetary crises, including high inflation. One policy initiated in an attempt to control this was the counterstamping of older coins with new values, such as the 40 Reis counterstamped over an older 80 Reis, as illustrated.
When Portugal adopted the escudo in 1825, Brazil retained the reis, which is still used today. The modern Real is subdivided into 100 centavos.
