Cook Islands Coin Sets
Cook Islands consists of about 15 Polynesian islands in the southern Pacific Ocean about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand with a population of only about 14,000. The islands were first sighted by Spanish navigator Alvaro de Medada in 1595, and landed on by Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Quieros in 1606, they were named after British explorer Captain James Cook who sighted them as late as 1770, making three later visits. He originally named them the Hervey Islands, in honour of Augustus John Hervey, a lord of the Admiralty. They were declared a British Protectorate in 1888, and were annexed to New Zealand in 1901. Independence was gained in 1965, but New Zealand retains responsibility for is defence and external affairs. Cook Islands remains a member of the British Commonwealth. The Capital is Avarua on the island of Rarotonga.
Cook Islands own coins were first issued in 1972.
