In the world of minerals and gemstones, cleavage is defined as "the tendency of a crystallised mineral to break along certain definite directions producing more or less smooth surfaces" (Webster).
A second definition is "name applied to diamond crystals showing many flaws, or to broken fragments of crystal".

Is defined as "the method of dividing a diamond crystal into two or more pieces by splitting the stone through the grain (cleavage direction).
