Edward IV Groat

Edward, Duke of York, headed the Yorkist dynasty during the reign of Henry VI, the son of Henry V of Agincourt fame, who had inherited the throne of England as an infant. Henry VI, the Lancastrian incumbent king, was sadly, not the man that his father had been, and was a weak ruler whose piety and gentleness made him more suited to a career in the church than that of King of England, especially during a time of dynastic struggle and constant warfare with France. Despite this, he managed to stay on the English throne for almost 40 years before Edward, Duke of York dethroned him and seized the Crown for himself, taking the hapless Henry prisoner in 1461.
However, Henry's son Edward, Prince of Wales and Queen, Margaret remained at large and were able to conspire against him. Edward IV lost his throne again briefly between 1470 and 1471, but the death of the Lancastrian Prince of Wales at the Battle of Tewkesbury cleared the way for Edward IV to murder Henry VI and secure his place on the throne until his own death of natural causes in 1483.
The coin featured here is a groat from Edward IV's first reign between 1461-1470. The scratches on the face almost look deliberate, and it might be speculated that this was done by a Lancastrian supporter with a grudge against the Yorkist king.
