Elizabeth I Silver Half Penny (7th Issue, 1601 - 1602)
This hammered silver half-penny is the smallest denomination issued by Elizabeth I. Coins of less than this size were considered impractical due to their neccessarily tiny size in relation to other silver coins, despite a demand for smaller change for purchases of less than a penny or half-penny. The farthing denomination existed in theory, but not as a coin (the threehalfpence was issued in order to provide change for farthing purchases paid for with a penny). The idea of striking coins in a baser metal than silver was considered too vulgar for the Crown to contemplate at the time.
