Hammered Shilling of Elizabeth I

The Reign of Elizabeth I is often fondly looked back upon as a golden age in England's history, due to England's rising level of wealth and prestige during her reign, and with the famous victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and his ill-fated second Wife Anne Boleyn. When her elder sister came to the throne after the death of their younger brother Edward VI in 1553, Elizabeth found herself imprisoned, as Mary and her followers feared that as the protestant heir apparent in an increasingly protestant country, she would become the centre of plots against Mary's throne by people hostile to a Catholic monarch. Elizabeth survived her captivity, in spite of pressure from Mary's followers to have her executed, and when Mary died in 1558, Elizabeth inherited the throne and when on to reign for the next 45 years, during which she was herself subject to plots centring around her catholic cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, who was Elizabeth's heir apparent, until Elizabeth had her executed at Fotheringay Castle in 1587, causing the King of Spain, Mary of England's widower, to attempt to invade England and re-convert the country back to catholicism.
Elizabeth survived all this to die of natural causes in 1603, and because she never married or had children (hence her nickname 'The Virgin Queen') Mary Queen of Scots son, James VI of Scotland claimed the throne of England, united the Kingdoms and styled himself as 'King of Great Britain', although the two kingdoms would not truly be united as one until 1707.
