Severus II 305 - 306 (Caesar) 306 - 307 (Augustus)

Little is known about Severus II's early life, other than that he was a soldier from Illyria. Galerius was made a Caesar by the Emperor Gallerius in 305, and was also the junior Emperor to Constantius Chlorus. He was promoted to the rank of Augustus in the West upon the death of Constantius Chlorus. When Maxentius rebelled against Galerius with the aid of the former Emperor Maximian, Galerius despatched Severus II to quell the rebellion. However, Severus was trapped in Ravenna and persuaded to surrender by Maximian in return for promises of humane treatment. However, Maxentius reneged on this promise and had him executed in 307.

Coins of Severus II tend to be quite scarce, perhaps due in part to his junior status and also the brevity of his reign. The featured coin is a nice grade for this rare emperor.
