George VI Florins
Coins of George VI were issued from 1937 to 1952, although no florins were issued in 1952. There were three different "types" of florin issued during George's reign:-
- First Issue
From 1937 to 1946 inclusive, British "silver" coins including florins were made of 50% silver. The obverse design shows the king facing left, and the inscription GEORGIUS VI D G BR OMN REX. The engraver's initials H.P. can be seen under the neck near the right hand side.
The design of the reverse shows a crowned rose, with a thistle above a letter G at the left, and a shamrock above the letter R at the right. The inscription reads FID DEF IND IMP TWO SHILLINGS (DATE). The engraver's initials K.G. can be seen to the left of the rose stem near the bottom of the coin.
- Second Issue
The second issue is identical to the first issue except for their composition, being made of an alloy of copper and nickel called cupro-nickel.
- Third Issue
On the third issue, the inscription on the reverse was changed to FID DEF TWO SHILLINGS (DATE).
