Second French Empire
In 1851, Louis-Napoleon, Nephew of the great Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in a coup and declared himself Emperor the following year, bringing an end to the Second French Republic.
In order to reflect this change, Napoleon had the French coinage redesigned. His own portrait (engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre) was now shown on the obverse, and the reverse now featured the Bonapartiste Coat of Arms, with the eagle at the centre harking back to the military glories of his uncle's reign.

Silver 5 Francs
French 5 franc coins have varied in size, metal, and alloy due to inflation, precious metal prices, and other factors. The 1853 - 1870 Imperial issues are a similar size to a US Morgan or Peace silver dollar, or a British crown. They contain almost a three quarters of an ounce of fine silver.
