5 Francs
The French 5 Francs coin first appeared in 1795 (Year 4 of the French Revolutionary Calendar), when the French Republican Government introduced a decimal currency to replace the Livre, Sou, Denier (£sd) System of the Ancien Regime. The five franc piece was the largest silver coin issued for circulation. This coin 25g and was made of a 90% silver alloy which contained 0.7234 Oz of silver, and was issued according to this weight and purity until World War One, when inflation debased the French currency.
The French 5 Franc coin was also issued as a gold coin from 1854 to 1889.
The 5 franc piece was reintroduced in 1933, this time as a smaller nickel, and later cupro-nickel coin.
