A Brief History of Katanga
Katanga was an unrecognised state that broke away from Belgian Congo following independence in 1960. Its capital was Elisabethville.
Formed initially with the connivance of Belgium, Katanga did not achieve much political support from the outside world and was re-annexed by Congo in 1963. Its only president, Moise Tshombe, would nevertheless later become Prime Minister of Congo between 1964 and 1965.
During this period, an independent Katangese Franc was issued, for which coins of 1 and 5 francs were struck.
