Latvia - The First Republic

Latvia was settled by the Livonian Knights in about the thirteenth century. It was invaded by Poland and Sweden in 1561, and has been under Russian or German domination since 1795. Between 1918 and 1939 it was an independent republic, unitl coming under Russian control again in 1940. This control passed to Germany, and back to Russia, until the modern Latvia again became independent on 22nd August 1991.

Five Lati Crowns
The silver 5 Lati crown sized coins were the largest and most impressive coins issued by the First Latvian Republic, and they were only issued during three years, 1929, 1931, and 1932. We have a small quantity of each date.
According the the Bank of Latvia:-

The 5-lats silver coin had a destiny unlike, perhaps, any other coin of the world - it became a symbol of Latvian freedom and sovereignty, a ray of hope, secretly stored by almost every family who lived in the occupied Latvia, was deported to Siberia, or went into exile, scattered over the whole world.
