Libya
Until the 20th Century, Libya spent most of its history as the province or colony of a foreign empire. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Egyptians, Italians, French and British have all at one time controlled or occupied what later became known as Libya in 1951, when the country was founded as an independent nation under a constitutional monarchy.
Until 1971, two years after Colonel Gaddafi's coup de etate and the proclamation of a Libyan republic, the Libyan Pound was Libya's basic currency unit, subdivided into Piastres (100 to the pound) and Milliemes (1000 to the pound), following which, the currency was replaced by the Dinar at par (with the Dirham replacing the Milleme).
