Marcus Aureleus Marius

Marius: 268
Little is known of the Gallic Emperor Marcus Aurelius Marius. He was said to have been a former blacksmith who joined the Roman Army and rose through the ranks to become an officer. Following Postumus' asassination in 268, he seized power briefly before being murdered himself by his soldiers with a sword of his own manufacture. The numismatic evidence left behind by Marius would seem to disprove the brevity of his reign however. Although coins of his reign are extremely scarce, the number of surviving examples would suggest that he had to have reigned for more than just a few days before being deposed. Marius was succeeded as Gallic Emperor by Victorinus.
