Monolithic Wedding Rings
According to our copy of the "Oxford English Dictionary", one meaning of monolithic is "massively solid, single and uniform". This is a near perfect description of most of our wedding rings, which are made from one single piece of gold or platinum. Actually the same description could also be applied to cast rings, but these are not usually as good as one-piece forged and engineered wedding rings.

One Piece - No Join
Most of our wedding rings are forged from one solid piece of gold or platinum. This makes the ring stronger and more durable. Also there is no solder join to discolour or crack.
This applies to our flat, court, and 'D' section wedding rings.
It does not apply to some of the rings, such as the Russian rings, even though we start with forged blanks, because obviously at least two of them need to be cut to allow assembly. We are not magicians! The hand-hammered rings cannot always be made from forged blanks because they spread when being hammered, neither can dipped and fancy shaped rings. Whenever possible, we try to start with forged blanks.

Engineered Blanks
A thick solid sheet of gold or platinum is fed into a heavy duty stamping press, which uses brute force to stamp out a "washer" of precious metal. This washer is then further pulled, pushed, and pummelled into the approximately correct shape for the desired ring. this processing includes stretching and rolling to a selection of different finger sizes. The blanks may need annealing several times during this process depending on the amount of work applied to them. The more the blanks are worked, the finer and silkier their grain structure becomes, and the better the finished product

Worth Waiting For
Because the equipment needed for this is heavy and powerful, and the blanks are made in large batch sizes, we are reliant for our supplies of blanks on a major bullion dealer and pre-fabricator. In recent years they have reduced their stock levels and increased their order times and prices. Some delivery times are as long as eight weeks. Don't forget we have our work to do after we receive the blank. This makes it advisable to place your order as early as possible. We would prefer to have your ring ready a month too early rather than decline your order because of lack of time. For obvious reasons we would be reluctant to accept your wedding ring order if there is the slightest risk of it being ready even a single day too late!
The superior strength and finish make it worthwhile though.

Fine Tuning the Finger Size
Our other pages give advice about finger sizing, and trying to get the correct measurement of your finger size before ordering. In the event that our monolithic wedding rings need their size adjusting, their excellent structural qualities usually mean that they can be adjusted up or down by a considerable amount. Although it is unusual for a specially ordered ring to need adjusting by more than a half or full size, they could in practice be adjusted upwards by six sizes or more, or down by two sizes or more.

18 Carat or 9 Carat. Which is Harder Wearing?
You will have noticed that we don't offer 9 carat wedding rings, and may wonder why. The simple answer is that 9 carat is not good enough, so we don't use it for wedding rings. There are other reasons. It's too soft, and if this surprises you, please read our Hardness of Gold Alloys page. There are also plenty of cheap mass produced 9 carat wedding ring available in most High Street jewellers.
