Palestine
Palestine was a conventional name used between 450BC and 1948 AD to describe the region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, and various adjoining lands. The boundaries of Palestine have changed throughout history and over the years it has been at the centre of much controversy.
Palestine was settled by the Philistines around the 12th Century B.C. And was settled by the Jews who established the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Palestine was often invaded and conquered by most of the historic empires of ancient Europe and Asia because of its position as a land bridge connecting Asia and Africa. During the Crusades, Christians from throughout Europe joined armies dedicated to establishing and maintaining Christian rule of the Holy lands. The Christians were eventually ejected entirely from the area. Palestine became part of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th Century. Together with Transjordan, Palestine was mandated to Great Britain by the League of Nations in 1922, after it fell to Britain in World War I.
Following World War II and the Holocaust, in 1947 the British Government announced their wish to terminate the mandate. The United Nations General Assembly voted to partition the territory into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Whilst the Jewish state accepted the proposal the Arab Higher Committee, and a civil war ensued. Israel was declared in 1948. Unrest has continued to occur between the Arabs and the Jews ever since.
