Portuguese Coins
The Portugese Real was the standard unit of currency in Portugal until 1911. It dated back to the 14th century when it was introduced as a silver coin worth 120 Dinheros. Over the years, inflation wore away the value of the real and coins worth one real were phased out for use in the domestic economy by the end of the 16th Century. This 40 Reis coin was the highest denomination copper coin of the period, issued in the name of Miguel I during the Portugese Civil War of 1828-1834. Five years later, in 1837, the 40 Reis coin was phased out as coin values were decimilised (for this reason, the Peca, a gold coin worth 6,400 was also phased out and replaced with coins worth 5,000 and 10,000 Reis respectively). In 1911, a further currency reform replaced the Real with Escudo as the standard unit of Currency in Portugal (which was of course, itself replaced by the Euro in 2002).
