Billon Double Stuiver of Charles the Bold

Charles the Bold 1433 - 1477
Charles the Bold, in 1467, succeeded his father Philip the Good as the Duke of Burgundy. His possessions also included Brabant, Holland, Zeeland, and Limburg, in the Netherlands.
He had great ambitions of conquest, and set about the expansion of his empire to include Picardy, Provence, Dauphiné, Paris, and Switzerland.

Billon
Billon is a naturally occurring alloy containing about 50% silver, but with wide variations. It has often been used to produce coins.

Stuivers and Double Stuivers
Coins from the area of the Netherlands were produced with distinctive style features. The area was prosperous at the time, and there was much money in circulation, although prices were high.
Many of the coins were distinctly large, and featured intricate and flamboyant patterns in late gothic style.
A stuiver was a double groat, groot or gros. Other names were used for the same coin, and these include double gros, botdrager and plack.
Our authentically produced replica has been produced by the ancient process of hand hammering.

Obverse:
A large, flat topped shield, quartered with the Duke's arms, and a central inescutcheon bearing a rampant lion.
KAROLUS DEI GRA DUX BG BRAB Z LIM

BENEDICTUM AN SIT NOMEN...
Our engraver has taken some slight liberties with the wording on this particular piece. Of course, at the time any person caught making copies of coins would be severely punished, by a large fine, imprisonment, mutilation, or execution.
