Tower Mint Silver Penny of Charles I |
Tower Mint
The Tower Mint was located at the Tower of London, and during Charles' reign operated under the King between 1625 and 1642, and under Parliament from 1642 to 1648.
Silver Pennies
The silver penny as a denomination dates back to Anglo Saxon times, and has its origins in the Roman silver denarius. It is still produced even today for the Maundy money.
Our authentically produced replica is based on a penny struck at the Tower mint, and has been produced by the ancient process of hand hammering.
Obverse:
Portrait of King Charles I facing left, with I as a mark of value placed to the right of the head. The original mintmark of two pellets (raised dots) has been retained on our replica.
CAROLUS D G M B F ET H REX
Reverse:
Garnished oval shield, the quarters containing a lion rampant, a harp, three leopards and fleurs-de-lys.
The original reverse inscription would have read:
CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNO
Our engraver has taken some slight liberties with the wording on this particular piece. Of course, in the time of Charles I, any person caught making copies of coins would be severely punished, by a large fine, imprisonment, mutilation, or execution. It is therefore possible that the engraver making our copy was being over cautious so that his own head avoided meeting the same fate as that of Charles!
