According to the information card:-

The portraits shown on four of the Romanian coins in circulation evoke scenes of Romania's History. Between the 13th and 14th century, three autonomous provinces, whose population spoke the Romanian language, were set up on the territory of today Romania: Moldoavia, Wallachia and Transylvania.
Preventing the Ottoman Empire from expanding towards the centre of Europe, the three provinces kept their independence being led by princes as skilful in politics as in the art of war. Stephen the Great strengthened Moldavia both economically and politically, during the longest and most glorious reign of the Roman Middle Ages. He won most of the numerous wars against the Turks. After each victory, the laid the foundation of a monastery. For this reason, the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him in 1992.
The Prince of Vallachia, Micahel the Brave succeeded in working out the first political union of the three provinces in 1600. Conducting a skilful politics of foreign alliances, Constantin Brancoveanu, maintained the autonomy of Vallachia from the Ottoman Empire. The Turks executed him together with his four sons in 1714 and the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him in 1992. In 1859, by getting elected in both Moldovia and Wallachia, Alexandru loan Cuza became the first prince of Romania, His reforms laid the ground of the Romanian modern state.
