Rosa Americana Halfpenny
William Wood's 'Rosa Americana' copper Halfpenny, Penny and Twopence issues of 1722-1723 are extremely popular amongst American and British colonial coinage collectors.
William Wood (1671 - 1730) was an iron master and industrial magnate who applied to the King (via his mistress, the Duchess of Kendal) for a licence to strike copper coins for Ireland and the American colonies. They were not popular with the local populations however, particularly the underweight Rosa Americana issues, which many in the American Colonies refused to accept. William Wood ultimately made a loss on this venture, and due to this and later disastrous ventures, died a ruined man in 1730.

The obverse of these coins features the standard portrait of George I, the reverse features a Tudor Rose, with the legend 'Rosa Americana Utile Dulce' (Rose of America, Useful and Pleasant).
