Sard
Sard is a the yellowish red or brownish red variety of chalcedony which is cryptocrystalline quartz. Its colouring is due to the presence of iron impurities in the form of hydrated iron oxide known as limonite. It can vary from a yellowish-red to brownish-red. It is usually cut en cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglios and cameos.
