A pocket watch seal had both a decorative and a practical function, used mainly to weight the watch down in the wearer's wastecoat pocket, the seal was also occasionaly used as a person's personal seal to make wax impressions in documents such as letters. This original function of the seal would suggest why it came to be known as the 'seal.
