A Brief History

The Third Farthing, originally a copper coin was first struck in 1827 exclusively for colonial use (in Malta), as with most fractional farthings. A further issue was struck in 1835 under William IV, and another issue was struck in 1844. In 1866, a smaller bronze issue was struck, and the denomination was struck occasionally thereafter until 1885.
Further issues were struck in 1902 and in 1913. The denomination was discontinued thereafter. The issue was also known as the 'British Grain' (on the basis that the farthing was known in Malta as a three grano coin).
