Caius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus
251 - 253 AD

Unfond Memories
Little appears to be known about his early life, except that he was born about 204 AD. It is known that he held high command in the army of Trajan Decius which was defeated by the Goths in 251 at Abrittus, and it is also suspected that he may have been instrumental in the death of Decius. He was proclaimed by the army to fill the vacant throne, elevated his son Volusian to the rank of Caesar, and also Hostilian, the younger son of Decius as joint emperor and Augustus.
Gallus' first act as emperor was to conclude a shameful peace with the Goths, allowing them to retain booty and Roman prisoners, and on other terms shameful to the Roman Empire such as an annual tribute in gold.
He appears to have achieved nothing good during his reign, returning to Rome and presenting his peace deal with the Goths as though it were a great victory, and spending much time in indolence until challenged by Aemilian. Plague was widespread, and may have been spread by his returning troops. This caused depopulation leading to famine and further invasions by Goths, Persians, and others.
On his defeat by Aemilian, he was killed by his own soldiers for his cowardice.
