Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago is formed from two islands. Both islands had originally been under Spanish control, but by the end of the Napoleonic wars, both islands were firmly under the British flag, and the two colonies were eventually combined to form a single colony in 1888.
An attempt was made to introduce British currency into the area, however, this met with limited success as the Spanish Dollar (8 Reale or 'Piece of Eight') was more widely circulated and understood in the area. In 1935, the Trinidad and Tobago joined the British West Indies currency union and used the British West Indies Dollar until 1964, two years after gaining independence from Britain.
The Trinidad and Tobago Dollar has been the currency of this country ever since. The Queen's portrait was removed from the coinage after a Republic was declared in 1972.
