Ulysse Nardin Watches
The Ulysse Nardin company was founded in 1846 at Le Locle, in the Jura mountain region of Switzerland, by its eponymous owner, who had studied horology under his father, Leonard-Frederic Nardin, and William Dubois.
The company is best known for its production of marine chronometers, pocket chronometers, chronographs, deck watches, and other high precision timepieces.
According to a 1975 report by the Neuchâtel Observatory concerning the performance of chronometers covering the period from 1846 to 1975, Ulysse Nardin obtained 4324 certificates of performance for mechanical marine chronometers out of a total of 4504 awarded, i.e. 95%, 2411 special prizes out of which 1069 were First Prizes. Ulysse Nardin also obtained 747 First Prizes in the categories deck watch, pocket chronometer and wristwatch. At various International Exhibitions Ulysse Nardin and his successors obtained 14 Grands Prix (First Prizes), the "Prize Medal" and the "Progress Medal", 10 Gold Medals, 2 Prix d'Honneur, 2 Silver Medals.
In 1983, a group headed by Rolf W. Schnyder bought the company, or its name, and proceeded to make complicated watches.

Silver Deck Clock
We recently acquired the silver cased deck or captain's clock shown in our photographs.
It is a ship's deck clock or captain's watch. The back is screw threaded. The winder stem and push-piece are of extended length as this type of timepiece was designed to be housed in its brass case within a wooden box. The silver case is unglazed, but the brass case has a screw-on top. The dial is marked:-
ULYSSE NARDIN
LOCLE SUISSE
122701
The movement is marked:-
ULYSSE NARDIN SWISS
122701
The outer case back is inscribed:-
HS 2, with an upward arrow between the letters and number. We believe this is a British Navy mark.
The inner case back is inscribed:-
ULYSSE NARDIN LOCLE on a scroll, FFBA2, has a Swiss (duck) hallmark with a (date?) letter B, .925, 618978, with a watchmaker's hand engraved (scratched) 122701 (the movement number).
On the outer bezel covered by the screw back is the number 978.
The inside of the brass case is marked
DENNISON
BRITISH MADE
1029
The wooden (mahogany) box has a card holder on its inside lid. This may have been to hold a chronometer certificate. If so, the certificate is no longer with the watch.

Chronometer?
Although there is no marking on this timepiece stating it to be a chronometer, we have seen a similar item on the website of the (British) National Maritime Museum which describes it as a Deck Watch, and another offered for sale on eBay with a photograph showing a card in place stating "Issued from Chronometer Section, Hydrographic Department, Ministry of Defence, Herstmonceux Castle, Hailsham, Sussex.

Condition
The entire piece appears to be in excellent condition, fully working, although we have not checked the accuracy of its time-keeping, but have no reason to doubt it. There are three areas on the back plate of the movement where there are signs of very minor corrosion in the form of fingerprints. There are a few small rust spots on the blued hands, which we had not originally noticed, and which are not obvious on our photographs. It is possible that these may be easily removed, but we have not made any attempt. There is also a slight split in the wood of the outer box lid, which would probably benefit from the use of some wood glue. Again we have not attempted any treatment.
The spring in the brass catch of the box is present but ineffective, but should be easy to replace if desired.
We feel that any servicing and refurbishment work would be best left to an expert or enthusiast. We offer the piece for sale in it's present condition as described.

Photographs
All the photographs shown are of the same watch. The balance wheel cannot be seen on the "Movement" photograph because this photo was taken with the movement "going". For the "Balance Wheel & Regulator" photograph, we waited for it to stop.
You may notice that our photographs are unusual in not showing the time as 10 past 10, as Yannick our photographer is more used to photographing coins and jewellery than clocks and watches. Perhaps our photographs will become rare collector's pieces some day!

Honest Appraisal
As always in our advertising and descriptions, we have tried to be accurate and honest about the products we are offering for sale. If spot any errors, we would be delighted to hear from you.
