XXIII (23rd) Olympiad Los Angeles 1984
During 1983 and 1984, the USA issued special commemorative silver dollars to mark the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.
First American Commemorative Dollars
Although the USA has produced a long series of commemorative half dollars, it did not produce commemorative dollars until this issue, so that these are the first American silver commemorative dollars.
Two Designs
There were only two different designs, one in 1983 showing a discuss thrower, and another in 1984 showing a classical scene of a podium on an arch. In each year, there were uncirculated coins issued by all three mints, plus a proof coin issued only by the San Francisco mint. This makes a complete set of eight coins.
Three Coin Silver & Gold Proof Set
In addition there was a 3 coin set (and a number of others) commissioned featuring both the 1984 and 1983 Silver Proof Olympic Dollar coins and a commemorative Gold Proof $10 Half Eagle.

Dollars were struck at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco mints. Philadelphia coins do not carry a mintmark.
