Silver Coins of the USA issued for General Circulation
US coin denominations from the Dime (10 cents) to the Dollar were struck in 90% or 0.900 fine silver (also known as 'coin silver') until 1964. Following this, the coinage was debased. The silver content in the Half Dollar was reduced to 40%, and removed from the other denominations entirely. In 1971, the Half-Dollar to was reduced to a base metal coin of nickel-clad copper. That same year in 1971, America removed itself from the gold standard and the US Dollar became a truly fiat currency, with very little intrinsic worth.

Pre-65 US silver coins are popularly used in the US as bullion, and are sold for their silver content. Prices are usually calculated by their dollar face value, rather than simply by weight. Each dollar face as struck would have contained 0.7736 troy ounces of silver, but a lot of US dealers calculate the silver weight at 0.715oz per dollar face, taking into consideration the average wear from circulation on 'junk' coins.

The average 40% silver 1965-1960 Kennedy Half Dollar will not have seen anywhere near as much circulation as the average 90% pre-65 coin however, so they are usually calculated at the full Actual Silver weight of 0.296 troy ounces per dollar face.
