Brass weights were often used to check guineas, sovereigns, and other precious metal coins. They often resemble coins or medallions. These are items of exonumia, and are collectable in their own right..

Apothecaries Weights
We show photographs of an interesting apothecaries brass weight. We do not know the significance of the "3ij" on the reverse.
It was made by or for W & T Avery, who are still a well-known maker of scales today.

James II Brass Weight
Usually, it is fairly obvious what weights are for. In this case, we originally expected this to be a guinea weight, but the crowned XII S inscription make no sense to us. We are sure the mystery will be solved someday.
