Canada has issued its own coins since 1858, and was one of the few countries to continue issuing silver coins for circulation until 1958. Canada's gold and silver bullion coins show their namesake and symbol of Canada, the Maple Leaf. | ||
The Cayman Islands were discovered by Columbus in 1503 and named Tortugas meaning turtles. Now a British colony , it issued its first coins in 1972. | ||
Ceylon was under British rule from 1796 to 1948, after which it became an independent republic. It changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972 when it adopted a new constitution. Our photo shows a one cent of George VI dated 1943. | ||

From 1902 to 1916, the subdivision of the Colon, Costa Rica's main currency denomination, was the Centimo. Before and after those dates, it was the Centavo. We picture a 10 Centimo of 1910. | ||
Discovered by Columbus in 1492, Cuba remained mainly under Spanish control until about 1898, after which it started to issue its own coins. The first issue of gold coins was from 1915 to 1916, and our photograph shows a 1916 diez (10) pesos. The portrait is that of Cuban hero poet Jos&eacut; Marti. | ||
Known to the ancient Greeks who issued the very first coins, Cyprus was famous for its copper mines, indeed its name in Greek means 'copper'. As a mediterranean island, Cyprus was under the control of many different regimes including Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Franks, Ottoman Turks, and the British. Since 1960 Cyprus has been independent from Britain, but in 1974, the northern part has been under Turkish influence, having declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Our coin is a £1 coin issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. |
