East Africa - 5 Cents
The name "East Africa" appears on a large number of low value denominations from 1906 to 1964, although there was no country by this name. East Africa was an administrative group of five different British territories, Kenya, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, Uganda, and British Somaliland. The East Africa Currency Board issued coins for use in these areas under the auspices of the East Africa High Commission. Our coin shown is a 5 cent of Edward VIII dated 1936, and struck by the King's Norton Metal Company of Birmingham, hence the KN mintmark on the obverse under the word "cents".
Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Uganda later issued their own currencies.

Ecuador - 2 Sucres
Discovered by the Spanish in 1526, Ecuador remained under Spanish control as part of Nueva Grenada until 1822, when Antonio Sucre, a lieutenant of Simon Bolivar, defeated the Spanish. It joined Gran Colombia until 1830. Just as Bolivar is celebrated through much of Latin America, Sucre is honoured on Ecuador's coins. His portrait appears on our featured coin which is a 2 (dos) sucres dated 1973. This coin date was never released for circulation, although a small quantity recently came to light after the demise of the Birmingham Mint.

Equatorial Guinea - 15,000 Francos

The Republic of Equatorial Guinea was discovered by Portuguese explorer Fernão do Po in 1471, and it remained in Portuguese control until 1778 when it was traded to Spain. The British maintained a base there from 1827 to 1843 to combat the slave trade. It was known as Spanish Guinea from 1926 to 1963, and achieved independence in 1968. About this time, it adopted the CFA franc (Communaut Financiaire Africaine) as its currency, and issued its first coins in 1969.
We showcase an impressively large (100 mm) silver proof coin weighing one kilo.
