Latvia - 5 Lati On the east coast of the Baltic Sea, Latvia formed in about the 13th century, but has spent most of its time under the foreign control of, Poland, Sweden, Russia and Germany. It was independent between 1918 and 1939, but then came under, Russian, German, then Russian control until it finally became independent again on 22nd August 1991.
Liberia - 20 Dollars Liberia on the south west tip of west Africa was first explored in the 15th century, was settled as a colony for freed slaves by the American Colonization Society in 1822 with the aid of the US government and became a republic in 1847. The US dollar is legal tender.
Liguria - 96 Lire The Ligurian Republic lasted from 1795 when it was formed with a French revolutionary style government by Napoleon Bonaparte, to 1805 when it was annexed by France. Our coin shown is a 96 lire gold coin of year 1 = 1798.
Lithuania - 10 Litu
Luxembourg - 1 Euro Luxembourg was founded in about 963 AD as a Grandy Duchy, it lies at the junction of Belgium France and Germany. Under domination by various European states it became independent in 1867 at the Treaty of London. For years its currency was interchangeable with that of Belgium, it is now part of the Eurozone.
