The earliest coin issues of Macau for which we can find any reference were in 1952 under the Portuguese. The unit of currency is the Pataca (MOP), and the first gold coins were issued in 1982. 100 avos = 1 pataca. Although an administrative district of China since 1999, there has been no change to its coinage. The 2003 1,000 Patacas shown is one of the first gold coins issued under the Chinese regime, and was produced by the British Royal Mint. | ||
Madagascar underwent a number of slight name changes in its move from French Colony to modern independent state. The coin shown is a 1978 silver proof 10 Ariary, one of a two-coin set issued by the Democratic Republic of Madagascar when it changed from French influenced francs to Ariary. | ||
The British Protectorate of Nyasaland was established in 1891, reluctantly joined the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953, and became the independent nation of Malawi on 6th June 1964, becoming a republic two years later, and remains a member of the British Commonwealth. A sterling coinage was introduced in 1964 using pounds shilling and pence, but this was replaced by a decimal system with 100 tambala to the kwacha. Our featured coin is a silver proof crown sized 5 kwacha issued in 1997 for the Queen's golden wedding. | ||
The name Malaya was applied to the British protectorate made up of Johore, Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis, Trengganu, Pahang, Perak, Selangor, Penang and Malacca from 1939 to 1950. From 1952 coins were issued by Malaya & North Borneo. | ||
The Maldives are a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, to the south-southwest of India. Because of pirate activity in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Maldives aligned themselves with Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and in 1887 became a British Protectorate. Traditionally ruled by a sultan, they finally became a republic in 1968, three years after independence. Our 100 Rufiyaa coin features the Cutty Sark sailing ship. | ||
The Mediterranean island of Malta has been ruled by Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, the Knights of Malta, France and Britain. It voluntarily became a member of the British Empire in 1814, and became fully independent in 1974. We show an ingot shaped silver £5 of 2000. | ||
British sea captain John Marshall explored the islands in 1788, although they had been known to sailors for about 200 years previously. They comprise over 1,000 small islands with a population of around 50,000 people. They have been under Spanish, German, Japanese and American control until they became independent in 1986. The circulating coinage is American dollars, but the issuing of commemorative coins appears to be one of the major industries. Our featured coin shows the space shuttle "Challenger". | ||
Mauritius was formerly part of Isles de France et de Bourbon under French rule. Mauritius passed to British rule in 1814 and became independent in 1968. Its first coins under British rule were issued in 1822 but undated. We show a silver proof 10 rupees of 1981. | ||
Colonised by Spain in 1519, Mexico has a wealth of mineral resources including silver and gold. Mexico was one of the few countries issuing regular gold coins as late as 1947, as shown here on a 50 pesos. | ||

Genghis Khan brought Mongolia to the history books in the 13th century when he carved out a great empire, however this started to decline after his death, and after the 14th century, Mongolia came under Chinese control. It became independent in 1921 with USSR assistance, Our coin shows a commemorative gold 750 tukhrik or tugrik for the year of the child in 1980. | ||
Morocco has been invaded and occupied by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Visigoths, Byzantine Greeks, and Islamic Arabs since about 1200 B.C. Modern Morocco is the remnant of the Moors who occupied the region from the 7th century. Under French and Spanish control from the 19th century, Morocco became independent in 1956. | ||
