Nauru was discovered in 1798, and was previously known as Pleasant Island. Although it uses Australian dollars as it normal currency, it does issue its own commemorative coins, starting in 1993. We show a $10 silver proof coin with a scene from the life of the Queen Mother. | ||
Nepal occupies a high landlocked valley in the southern himalayas and is the only remaining Hindu kingdom. In June 2001 King Virendra, shown on our image of a gold asarfi, and many of its royal family were killed by Prince Dipendra who also fatally shot himself. King Gyanendra was crowned days later. | ||
The Netherlands gained its independence between 1568 and 1581, merged with Belgium in 1814, but Belgium separated in 1830. It is also known as the Low Countries or Holland. Our coin is a two and a half cent coin of 1906. | ||
The Netherlands Antilles are two groups of islands in the West Indies discovered in 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda of Spain. Mainly under Dutch influence since 1634, it now has domestic autonomy. The capital is Willemstat on the island of Curaçao. | ||
Newfoundland issued its first coins in 1865, five years before Canada's own first coinage. This continued until 1947, and Newfoundland joined the Canadian confederation in 1949. We illustrate a 5 cent coin of 1943. | ||
New Zealand has only issued its own coinage since 1933, before which it officially used British coins. Many of its coins show its unusual native flora and fauna. | ||
Niue, also known as Savage Island, is an island in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Tonga. It was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1774. Its remoteness, as well as cultural and linguistic differences between its Polynesian inhabitants and those of the rest of the Cook Islands, have caused it to be separately administered since 1922. The population of the island continues to drop (from a peak of 5,200 in 1966 to about 2,100 in 2004), with substantial emigration to New Zealand, 2,400 km to the southwest. It is a dependent state of New Zealand. Niue's own coins were first issued in 1987. | ||
Recorded history shows Korea as three kingdoms from 57 BC to 935 AD. At the end of the second world war, the USA entered Korea from the south, USSR from the North. North Korea, under Russian influence, proclaimed itself as a Democratic People's Republic on August 25th 1948. Its capital is Pyongyang. North Korea issued its first coins in 1959 with 100 chon equal to 1 won. We show a 500 Won of 1988. | ||
Norway is a constitutional monarchy. It is located in Scandinavia, part of northwest Europe comprised also of Sweden Finland and Denmark. Norway became a united kingdom in the 9th century. Since the 13th century, it has been politically associated with Sweden and Denmark, but has been independent since 1905. Norway is not currently part of the EU. | ||
Nova Scotia issued its own coins from 1823 to 1864, and from 1870 became part of the federation of Canadian provinces. The coin we show is a half cent of 1864. |
