Panama was discovered by Columbus in 1502 and explored by Vasco Nunez de Balboa in 1513. It became independent of Spanish rule in 1821and joined the Confederation of Greater Columbia. In 1903 with US encouragement it broke away and became a fully independent republic. Our photograph shows a silver 1 Balboa coin. | ||

Peru has always been famous for the gold of its Incas. To them it reflected the colour of their sun god. Peru was also one of the few countries to issue gold coins after 1932. Only about 6 countries issued gold coins in 1956, the date of the 10 Soles we picture. | ||
The Philippines were discovered by Magellen in 1521, but were under mainly Spanish control until 1898, when they came under American influence until 1946 when it became an independent republic. Our coin shown is a one centavo of 1937. | ||
Famous as the home of Fletcher Christian after the Mutiny on the Bounty, from 1790 to 1808. The Pitcairns are group of islands over 1,000 miles south-east of Tahiti. Only the main island of Pitcairn is inhabited, and even its population has declined from a peak of 233 to less than 50. Its main economic activity is the sale of postage stamps to collectors. Its normal circulation coinage is that of New Zealand, but it also issues attractive commemorative coins for collectors. | ||
Poland had its first king, Boleslav, in 924 A.D, who is commemorated on the coin shown. It's history has been one of extreme turbulence, having been invaded and partitioned many times in its history. Its modern boundaries have been established since 1945, and it was under Russian influence until 1989 when it became an independent republic. | ||
Portugal has been an independent kingdom since the thirteenth century, and was responsible for the discovery of much of the new world. In 1910 it became a republic. Our photo shows a one centavo of 1917 which bears the arms of Portugal on the obverse. |
