1918 USA Illinois Commemorative Silver Half Dollar
The first US commemorative half dollar was issued in 1892/3, followed by a 20 year gap to 1915, a shorter gap to the Illinois coin in 1918. After this, a commemorative half dollar became almost a perpetual annual event.
In 1818, Illinois became the 21st U.S. state. The 1918 commemorative silver half dollar was issued to celebrate its centennial.
The Illinois fifty cents is generally agreed to be one of the finest and most attractive coins of its series.

Designs

Obverse
Portrait of Abraham Lincoln, Illinois' best known resident, by the US Mint's Chief Engraver George T. Morgan. John R. Sinnock, completed the reverse. There is an argument the Al Capone is slightly better known than Lincoln, but so far the US Mint have not chosen to create a coin bearing his portrait.

Reverse
John R. Sinnock, designed the reverse, which consists of the state seal depicting an eagle holding in its beak a banner inscribed STATE SOVEREIGNTY and NATIONAL UNION. Apparentlly Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo instructed that the Illinois motto be replaced with the United States motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, but this change was not made, although this motto was also added.
