Bradford Workhouse Counterstamp on Copper Company Penny Token

Featured is a copper token struck with a countermark over a Union Copper Company Penny Token. Contrary to popular perception, workhouses were not just prisons for the poor, they also provided outdoor relief to those who were deemed deserving enough to warrant it. To this end, workhouses such the Bradford Workhouse issued tokens so that they could provide paupers with the meagre sums neccessary to subsidise the receipient's basic requirements. As with other tokens, they were (in theory) fully redeemable in silver, gold or paper when presented to the issuer.
This is quite a scarce token, and an interesting relic of England's Dickensian social history.
