1817 was the first date of modern gold half sovereign issued.
Although half sovereigns from Edward VII onwards are available in quantity, earlier sovereigns of George III, George IV, and William IV, and even Victoria are all much scarcer. Strangely enough, we find many collectors do not venture back this far which means that prices for these monarchs are quite reasonable in view of the small quantities available.
