George III Sixpence

In 1816, there was a great recoinage designed to relieve the chronic shortage of change that had plagued the country for many decades. The silver coins were slightly reduced in weight and size to discourage the melting down or export of coins during periods of high silver prices. Apart from a reduction in silver content in 1920 from 0.925 to 0.500, and the complete elimination of silver from 1947 onwards, silver coins, including the sixpence, were produced to the same size and specifications until shortly before decimilisation in 1971.
