In 1980 the Royal Mint started to produce a gold five pound coin to sell to collectors. It has been produced in almost every year since, in either uncirculated or proof versions, sometimes both. The quantities issued are always low.
In 1981 only 5400 proof specimens were issued. They are housed in a plastic capsule inside a deluxe leather case.
