1992 Albertville French Winter Olympics Coins

Brief Historical Notes
The 1992 Albertville Olympic Games were the 16th Winter Olympics, and the last Winter Games to be staged in the same year as the Summer Games. Only 18 of the 57 events were held in Albertville itself, while nearby resorts hosted the rest. Freestyle skiing and short-track speed skating made their debuts as medal disciplines, as did women's biathlon. Norwegian skiers won every cross country skiing race, as Björn Daehlie and Vegard Ulvang each won three gold medals. Speedskater Bonnie Blair won the 500m and 1,000m events, while Gunda Niemann took both of the longest races. At age 16, ski jumper Toni Nieminen became the youngest male winner of a Winter event. Alpine skier Petra Kronberger won both the combined event and the slalom. Ki-hoon Kim earned gold medals in both short track events.
The writer actually attended these games, seeing a number of events in Meribel, including the Ice Hockey, although unfortunately we could not manage to get tickets for the final.

Olympic Coins
Most countries hosting Olympics issue special commemorative coins to celebrate the event, and these also help to fund the cost of hosting the games. They can make a good addition to many collections, and also make great gift items for any enthusiasts of the particular sports.
We only see the French coins for the Albertville Winter Olympics very occasionally, so if you are interested in them, please contact us to order sooner rather than later.
Most countries also issue Olpympic coins over a four year period, starting three years before the games, and ending in the same year as the games. Presumbaly this is done to increase demand and to help bring in funds in advance. France were no exception in this regard.

Silver Proof 100 Francs
These are a crown sized silver proof coin, issued by the Monnaie de Paris. They were issued in plastic capsules within plae blue leatherette cases, and our coins will be supplied complete with these boxes and certificates, unless otherwise stated. There was a series of nine coins issued. Most, if not all al them are similar to designs on gold proof 100 franc coins.
