2003 150th Anniversary of the Sydney Mint Pattern Coins Silver Proof 'Sovereign' Ten Dollar

In 2003, The Royal Australian Mint issued this silver proof coin to commemorate 150 Years of the Sydney Mint Pattern coins.

Sydney Mint Patterns

The Royal Mint decided to establish a branch in Australia after gold was discovered there. Before any coins were produced, patterns were made in order to test out the designs. Any minor adjustments could then be made to the coins before production began.

In the early years, Australian sovereigns featured a different reverse in order to set them apart from the Imperial version. Instead of the shield design, or St George and the Dragon, they have 'Sydney Mint' and 'Australia' written on the reverse

Design

The coin features the original 1853 sovereign pattern, designed by William Wyon, in the centre on both sides. The obverse has 'Elizabeth II Australia 2003' around the pattern design. The reverse has '1853 Sydney 2003 Mint Pattern Ten Dollars'.
