Gold coins can be divided into several categories, modern gold bullion coins such as krugerrands in ounces, fractions, and multiples, and older gold coins originally intended to circulate. Many of these older gold coins were issued in large quantities, and are still available today as bullion coins, at relatively small percentage premiums over the value of their intrinsic gold content. Better condition coins, in collectable grades, can also be bought for quite modest prices. This applies to many gold coins up to about 200 years old, depending on the country, issue quantities, and historical events. Fro British coins, sovereigns mainly, it applies from about 1871 to date, for French coins about 1810 onwards.
